PINAR DEL RÍO.–Party Political Bureau member, First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez visited areas where Virginia tobacco is being grown, to guarantee the raw material needed for cigarette production at a modern plant being built in the Mariel Special Development Zone.
Díaz-Canel dialogued with agricultural leaders and members of the Julián Alemán Basic Unit of Cooperative Production (UBPC), in the municipality of Consolación del Sur, which has planted 101 hectares of Virginia tobacco toward this end.
He took interest in the rotation and care of soils, as well as a novel system for the cultivation of high quality seedlings with a greater survival rate upon transplanting, while asking about the number of workers at the plantation and their income. Díaz-Canel likewise commented on the importance of women working in the sector, making a significant contribution and increasing the standard of living of their families.
Accompanying the Vice President were Gladys Martínez Verdecia, first Party secretary in the province, and Ernesto Barreto Castillo, president of the provincial Administrative Council.
