SANTA CLARA.— The commitment to support Cuba and fight for a better world for workers was ratified by George Mavrikos, General Secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), who paid a heartfelt tribute to comandante Ernesto Che Guevara in the Sculptural Complex honored with his name in Santa Clara. Accompanied by Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, general secretary of the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC), the union leader laid a wreath at the statue of Che and then toured the Memorial where the remains of the heroic guerrilla and his brothers in arms in Bolivia rest, as well as visiting the museum housing pictures and objects related to the life of Ernesto Guevara. In the visitors’ book, the WFTU leader expressed his admiration and respect for the hero of the Quebrada del Yuro, who inspired the current struggles of the peoples of the world, which aim to eradicate social inequalities. During his tour of Villa Clara, Mavrikos, who was also accompanied by Jorgelina Pestana Mederos, president of the government in Villa Clara and Consuelo Baeza Martín, secretary of the CTC in the province, visited the National Institute for Research on Tropical Roots and Tubers where its Director, Dr. Sergio Rodríguez Morales, offered a detailed explanation of the contributions of the center as well as the efforts being made by the country to increase food production. Mavrikos, who arrived in Havana last Friday after visiting Venezuela and Panama, will complete a broad work agenda in Cuba, including meetings with union leaders and visits to production and historical and social interest centers.
