Mimy Succar, La India and Haila or, in other words, Peru, Puerto Rico and Cuba, lend their voices to accompany, from their particular perspectives and vocal possibilities, a song that portrays and praises the Latin woman, her empowerment and strength within a geographical area frequently marked by prejudice and centuries of social disparity.
A little over a month after its release, the song has already reached one million views on YouTube, constant airplay on radio stations in several countries and critical acclaim. However, I think we should add some information to these figures that may be interesting to Cubans.
In first place, the fact that a Cuban artist based in the island has been invited to take part in the island, may seem unimportant, but it is not. Tony and Diego made a risky and brave choice in the case of Haila because of what she symbolizes for our country in terms of roots and music. The singer, who has been fiercely attacked for the mere fact of living in Cuba, has stood for many years as a continuator and renovator of son, timba and salsa in the world.
Even though people from the rightwing have tried to persuade and extort her, Haila continues to work on the consolidation of her own style, on which she has acknowledged the direct influences of great women of the Cuban music such as Celina, Celia, Celeste, Freddy, Amelita and many more, as certainties of a musical lineage that will not die because it is Cuban heritage.
Her addition to Sin Fronteras can be complemented by the empathy shown towards her by Mimy Succar and La India, which shows the respect genuine Cuban music enjoys. The three artists manage to communicate with the listener from their own peculiar interpretative styles, creatively marking the Latin musical flavor and successfully meeting Succar’s and Giraldo’s expectations.
The musical video has a visual delicacy, in which the visual language coherently accompanies the text of the song. It is clear that the stereotypical beach scenes of women on yachts posing with their lush bodies, drinking champagne and dancers with erotic gestures were not compatible with this female-themed clip. Hopefully, videos like the one of Sin Fronteras will become a common tool for future domestic audiovisual campaigns, instead of unfortunately trying to replicate what sells north of the continent.
