Cuban basketball player Jasiel Rivero has just won the Champion League with the Hereda San Pablo Burgos team and spoke with Granma about his performance in Spain and his goals for the future.

–How did Burgos’ followers receive the team after the victory in the Champion League?

–It was an amazing experience. I never thought that in such a short period, I was going to have such a result. When we entered Burgos, it seemed like “the end of the world was coming.” The fans were euphoric with the victory. In the city, the team’s followers are very warm, very friendly with me, I feel at home. To receive so much appreciation when one is so far from home is very moving.

–What are the effects of the COVID-19 for the San Pablo Burgos team?

–The pandemic has affected the Burgos. We recently played a game almost without training because some players had the disease, though this did not warrant cancellation in the league. Throughout this situation, I have communicated frequently with the basketball commission in Cuba and we are waiting to take part in the tournament that the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) wants to hold in the Dominican Republic.

–In the two first seasons, you played an average of 20 minutes per game. Is this enough to develop a good performance in the court?

–I would like to have a little more time on the court, but the league’s level is high and very intense. The physical effort alone obliges us to play in shifts. My basketball skills have improved, and I continue to work on my low hoop movements and basics. I want to add the outside shot to my arsenal, since I don’t get to do it often, despite having a good average.

–Have other teams contacted you?

–I have received several offers, but I feel good in Burgos, and I’ve decided I’m staying here.
