In the context of the 89th Plenary Session of the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations Organization, in New York, on the Elimination of unilateral extraterritorial coercive economic measures as a means of political and economic coercion, Cuba demanded, once again, the cessation of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the U.S.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elio Rodríguez Perdomo, on the occasion of his intervention in the session, denounced that there is an "unacceptable tendency to increase" these sanctions, which affect the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the national progress plans.
He recalled that the U.S. government has been carrying them out for 62 years and, in turn, argued that they prevent "insertion into international markets on equal terms, in a fair and inclusive manner.
"The human damage of this policy is incalculable. There is no Cuban family that does not suffer the consequences of the blockade, which causes shortages and instability in the supply of essential and basic products," he said.
Rodriguez Perdomo emphasized that the situation is exacerbated by the inclusion of Cuba in the list of alleged State sponsors of terrorism. "This is a designation without any basis, authority or international support, in an attempt to justify and tighten the siege," he said.
As part of the international support at the meeting, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, communicated his support to the archipelago, and described the measures as "mere tools of neoliberal domination, destined to fail as the peoples of the world rise up".
