Building a fairer international order and ensuring that parliaments play a decisive role in this endeavor was one of the calls of the member of the Political Bureau and president of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State, Esteban Lazo Hernández, when he intervened in the general debate of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments.
Sustainable development, the value of parliamentary democracy and the participation of parliaments in the solution of some of the most complex issues facing humanity were aspects he highlighted.
He referred to the vast legislative activity developed by the Cuban Parliament in recent years. "Since the approval of the Constitution of the Republic, in a popular referendum in 2019, legislative initiatives that strengthen the institutional legal framework, the protection of rights and guarantees for all the Cuban people have been expanded," he said, and exemplified with the laws of the Code of Families; of Children, Adolescents and Youth; of Health and the Cuban Sports System, among others."
Lazo denounced the U.S. blockade against Cuba, although he specified that, in spite of its cruel impact and the terrible limitations it imposes, "our country has managed to advance and has demonstrated its will and capacity to continue supporting other nations, particularly in the sphere of medical cooperation."
He referred to the solidarity of the Cuban people with the Palestinian brothers in the face of the genocide of which they are victims today. "Our first thought goes to that brotherly people, with the demand that the massacre and usurpation of their lands cease immediately", and added that "the right to live in peace, with justice and freedom, is denied to this and other peoples of the world"; and said that "the greatest danger to international peace and security is the irresponsible conduct of the United States Government."
It is urgent, he said, to face the structural problems that threaten humanity "with more unity within our diversity"; and he assured that we must see that diversity "as an opportunity for agreement among our parliaments and work on everything that unites us, for the benefit of our peoples."
"In the face of differences, more dialogue. In the face of challenges, more solidarity and cooperation, the urgency is now, let's make it happen," he emphasized.
