Cuba's just defense of its "sovereignty and independence, based on the legitimate exercise of the right to self-determination and to establish relations of friendship and cooperation with all governments and peoples of the world, within a framework of mutual respect, sovereign equality, and adherence to international law," received the solidarity of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) yesterday.
In a statement, this regional integration mechanism expressed its strongest support and solidarity with the people and government of the largest of the Antilles, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
The document also reaffirms that "the Charter of the United Nations constitutes the essential foundation for peaceful coexistence among States, enshrining universal principles such as the sovereign equality of States, non-interference in internal affairs, the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of any State, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the inalienable right of each people to decide its own political, economic, and social project."
It notes that "the Alliance recognizes and values the historical trajectory of Cuban foreign policy, built on a doctrine of independence, national dignity, and a deep commitment to multilateralism." It recalls the island's ongoing commitment to international cooperation, solidarity among peoples, and respect for the norms of international law, contributing in a sustained manner "to understanding, peace, and collective well-being, especially in favor of the countries of the Global South."
Finally, it urges the international community and multilateral organizations to maintain their firm and supportive backing of the Republic of Cuba, in line with the resolutions repeatedly adopted by a majority of the UN, which call for the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade, and to contribute responsibly to peace, stability, and cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
