
The Decorated Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Fernando González Llort, was awarded the Pinar del Rio Coat of Arms, the highest honor conferred by this province on individuals who have excelled in different areas. The ceremony took place during a visit of several days by the prominent anti-terrorist, to the province where he met with students and workers from various sectors, and toured sites of historical, economic and social interest. On behalf of the people of Pinar del Río, Gladys Martínez Verdecia, first secretary of the Party in this area, and Ernesto Barreto Castillo, president of the People’s Power Provincial Assembly, bestowed the distinction on Fernando in recognition of his courage and his loyalty to the Cuban Revolution, demonstrated during his 15 long years of unjust incarceration in the United States. Born in 1963, Fernando is one of the five Cubans who, following a rigged trial, were condemned to long prison sentences in the United States, when they were attempting to prevent terrorist attacks by counterrevolutionary groups against Cuba. The Decorated Hero of the Republic of Cuba stated that it was an honor to receive such a distinction, awarded on behalf of a “heroic people, like that of the whole of Cuba, hardworking and humble”. "While I know that the desire is that this honor also be bestowed on Gerardo, Ramón and Antonio when they return, I especially accept it on behalf of the three of them, who today are unable to receive theirs." Fernando expressed his thanks for the warm welcome and affection and solidarity shown at each place he visited. He also reiterated his commitment to continue carving out the future of the Revolution and stated that he would not give up in the effort to bring home his three brothers in arms, who remain in prison. "I am certain that one day they will be here to receive the Coat of Arms. That day we will be united in joy for a well-deserved victory, won thanks to the efforts of all."
