During the opening plenary, Assembly President Esteban Lazo Hernández, referred to the new historic conditions during which the legislature is meeting. The deputies approved a declaration thanking parliaments and legislators around the world who have supported the cause of Cuba’s five heroes, as well as the governments, solidarity groups and institutions which have made the struggle of the Cuban people their own.

Yolanda Ferrer Gómez, president of the Assembly’s International Relations Commission, presented the declaration, adding, as Raúl had said in his December 17 statement, “It has been a long, intense battle demanding justice.” She described the Five as a symbol of the Cuban people’s dignity.

Today, the approximately 600 deputies representing 168 municipalities are discussing the implementation of agreements made at the 6th Party Congress, analyzing the country’s economic performance during 2014, and considering for approval the 2015 Economic Plan and State Budget.
