CÁRDENAS.— With a volume of over one million 400 thousand tones of oil produced this year, it was confirmed on the 24th of this month that the Matanzas oil workers, for the twentieth consecutive occasion, had exceeded their annual goal of one million tones of crude.

Another important energy source, the gas produced in the process also recorded remarkable levels and contributed to the national economy.

Yodalis Hernández, specialist at the Central Oil Drilling and Extraction Company (EPEP-C), explained that, in essence, this result is due to improved exploitation of the Varadero oilfield with an oil extraction ratio of almost 98%. He also noted that the group continues to work to increase its contribution to the economic plan of the country.

Experts praise the fact that the entity has been able to sustain and even increase oil production in recent years without harming the environment and in perfect harmony with the tourist sector.

Oil industry development in the area is carried out with extreme care both in drilling activities and crude extraction to avoid damages to the famous resort of Varadero. The comprehensive control of potential negative effects on the surrounding natural environment characterizes the work of both managers and employees of the company.

The Matanzas oil workers hit one million tones for the first time in 1995. Since then, despite the gradual decline of the reservoir, they have exceeded the amount every year. Nationally produced crude oil is mainly destined for electricity generation.
