OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CUBA CENTRAL COMMITTEE

As there is no better way to celebrate a success than feting those who made it possible with their dedication, commitment and passion, the University of Havana celebrated its 287th anniversary by awarding six of its prestigious professors with the title of Emeritus Professor; 18 with that of Consultant Professor; plus nine who received the Frank País Distinction, First Order; and the same number, the Pepito Tey Medal.

Qualities shared by the recognized teaching staff include careers of 40 to 50 years; the authorship of academic literature and scientific articles published in national and international journals; and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of generations of students.

University Rector, Gustavo Cobreiro, noted the challenges facing the institution of higher learning this year, highlighting its international relations. “The university has undertaken international activity in the most varied spheres, not only with U.S. universities, but also with more than 300 academic institutions, with which we now have links of cooperation and interchange. In all cases, respect for our national independence, our laws and institutions have been preserved. These principles will continue accompanying our work.”

Doctor Eusebio Leal Spengler, Senior Professor at the San Gerónimo University of Havana and Honorary Doctor of the University of Havana, made reference to the vast historical assets safeguarded by the institution, as well as the concept of Revolution developed by one of its most distinguished graduates, Fidel Castro Ruz, and what the university has signified for generations of Cubans who have studied at this “center of debate, home to ideas, home to thought and home to loyalty.”

Also present at the event commemorating the foundation of what was the former Royal and Pontifical University of San Gerónimo of Havana, were Dr. Rodolfo Alarcón Ortiz, minister of Higher Education; Honorary Doctor José Ramón Fernández, member of the Communist Party Central Committee and advisor to the President of the Councils of State and Ministers; and Ismael Grullé Pérez, general secretary of the National Union of Workers in Education, Science and Sports.
