A significant series of industrial works were completed by various Ministry of Construction (MICONS) entities in 2014. This will positively impact the efficient utilization of resources in agriculture, the water supply system, the energy program, and other sectors.

Among the most outstanding was the construction of two platforms for drilling oil and gas wells in the provinces of Mayabeque and Matanzas. In addition, work was completed on the canals and reservoir in the Las Tunas salt works, which should result in more efficiency in the industrial process of obtaining salt.

In the case of the energy program, a group of solar blocshave just been raised in the Guanabo, Cruces, Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba photovoltaic parks, contributing 6.5 megawatts to the national network.

According to the engineer Guillermo Fatjó Cruz, director of the MICONS waterworks program, as part of the recovery of lost water, five principal conduits were concluded, specifically the last two stages in the Patria lll-Turiguanó section, which guarantees the water supply to the Cayo Coco tourist resort in Ciego de Ávila province.

In relation to the water program, MICONS also worked in conjunction with the National Water Resources Institute (INRH) to rehabilitate the Lebrije dam and the Oxidation Lake in Trinidad, both located in Sancti Spíritus province.

In the agricultural irrigation sector, important projects were carried out during 2014 such as the finalization of the Yabú conduit in Villa Clara, which is benefitting 1,106 hectares of mixed crops. Completed in Holguín province was the installation of all irrigation systems in Mayarí municipality, part of which are linked to the East-West diversion system.

“All these works at the national level made it possible to benefit 4,056 hectares with new irrigation systems by the end of 2014: 1,447 hectares sown with rice and 2,609 with mixed crops,” Fatjó Cruz stated.

The head of the works program added that, for 2015, the Water Program will maintain a level of performance similar to that of 2014. “Investments will be fundamentally directed at guaranteeing a higher quality of water provision. This includes completing the rehabilitation and repair of various processing plants on which we have been working since 2013.”
