Polling stations opened at 7:00 am across the country this morning, to receive more than eight million citizens expected to exercise their right to vote and elect representatives to Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power. Some 27,379 candidates are being considered in the country’s 12,589 constituencies.

After singing the national anthem and reading the official convocation, the first voters at each polling station confirmed that the ballot box was empty and sealed, before depositing their ballots.
In Cuba, the right to vote is established in article 132 of the Constitution for all men and women who have reached 16 years of age, unless ruled ineligible in accordance with electoral law.
Voting in Cuba is a right, and can be considered a civic duty, but is not a legal obligation.
