The Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico, arrived in Cuba on the evening of Wednesday, October 7, on an official visit to the country.
Fico was received by Ana Teresita González Fraga, Cuba’s deputy minister of Foreign Affairs and members of the diplomatic corps. This is the first visit made by a Prime Minister of Slovakia to Cuba.
During his stay Fico will hold official talks with Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Ministers; pay tribute to Cuba’s national hero José Martí and undertake other relevant activities.
The visit by the Slovakian Prime Minister represents an opportunity to address the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations between both nations.
In this context, between 2012 and 2015, various agreements were signed in the spheres of economy, trade, finance, education, culture, sports and between radio and television institutes from both countries.
Since 1996 Slovakia has voted in favor of the UN resolution presented by Cuba condemning the U.S. blockade imposed on the island.
Cuba and Slovakia established diplomatic relations on January 1, 1993. Both countries currently maintain positive bilateral ties.
