During the 15th term of Cuba’s Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power, inaugurated this past April, delegates have received a total of almost 1.3 million proposals and requests. As part of the accountability process which will begin in November, 522,224 will be addressed by municipal administrations, reported Miriam Brito Sarroca, secretary of the National Assembly of People’s Power, during a press conference.
This first round of official accountability reports by People’s Power representatives will continue through December 30 in neighborhoods across the country, she said, adding that 79.9% of the population’s administrative proposals have already been resolved, and funding to address some 44,000 requests has been incorporated into next year’s budget.
Cuban law requires municipal delegates to present accountability reports to constituents every six months. Immediately following the April elections, workshops were held for delegates to discuss the principal issues affecting the functioning of municipal assemblies and neighborhood People’s Councils
(Consejos populares). Plans to improve these People’s Power bodies’ work emerged from this debate, and support from the national level has been greater, said Brito Sarroca, adding that National Assembly President Esteban Lazo Hernández considers this a priority.
