CIEGO DE ÁVILA.— The reorganization of water consumption and waste treatment program being implemented across small scale industries in the province will provide significant short term benefits, with the aim of creating a more eco-friendly manufacturing environment.
According to engineer Sergio Barrios García, provincial delegate of water resources, speaking to Granma, the first stage of the program - which includes training producers in the established norms according to each entity’s water allocation – should be completed this year.
The program is of key importance given that the majority of the 33 establishments of this kind in the province are located in areas of depleted groundwater resources, following a detailed report on the poor state of aquifers carried out, using water level forecasting methods, and early warning and alert systems, tools designed in this province more than a decade ago.
Other monitoring and control actions include close regulation of the quality of water used in production processes, systematic monitoring of storage levels and the use of hydrometers.
In regards to waste water treatment, Barrios García noted that many small scale industries have systems to safely manage residual liquids and do no pollute the environment. “This is one of the strengths of the program,” he commented.
The food processing company Ceballos, leader among small scale industry facilities in the province, consistently uses environmentally friendly practices, due to the hard work of its staff and directors, who have held the National Environmental Award for over a decade, and received numerous recognitions for their achievements in the field of science and technological innovation.
