Some 20 social projects linked to the computerization of society, teaching vital subject areas, legal inspections of Cuban companies and entities, construction works, revitalizing cities and various control and prevention actions to tackle improper social conduct, will be undertaken by the Federation of University Students (FEU) beginning next month.

These actions were agreed upon on October 21 in a meeting of FEU Presidents from universities affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education, which saw the participation of PCC Political Bureau member and First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

The initiatives will give university students the opportunity to actively participate in the updating of the country’s economic model, as well as improving other aspects of Cuban society.

The scheme, however, is not new, but has been consolidated over two academic years, explained Jennifer Bello Martínez, president of the FEU.

Díaz-Canel highlighted that these activities can not be regarded as isolated endeavors, but must be linked to the students’ development given the contribution they make to society from the moment they enroll at university, and in this way connect themselves with the reality of the country and the challenges its faces.

He noted that two important spheres in the island’s current panorama can not be overlooked: economy and ideology. “It is vital that in addition to the knowledge students receive at university, they can also participate in the main priorities of the nation, which generates sensitivity and makes them feel more committed.” Some 20 social projects linked to the computerization of society, teaching vital subject areas, legal inspections of Cuban companies and entities, construction works, revitalizing cities and various control and prevention actions to tackle improper social conduct, will be undertaken by the Federation of University Students (FEU) beginning next month.
