On October 26, Cyril Ramaphosa, vice president of South Africa, paid tribute to one of his country’s most important anti-apartheid leaders, Oliver Tambo (1917-1993), at the African Heroes Park in Havana.
After placing a floral wreath before the bust of Tambo, Ramaphosa stated that being in Cuba is like being at home, providing him with renewed energy and inspiration.
He also took the opportunity to reiterate his country’s support for an end to the unjust economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. on the island.
Ramaphosa emphasized the continual support Cuba offers his and other African countries across diverse spheres, which forms part of the past and present of our history of liberation and independence, he added.
The vice president also expressed his satisfaction at the return of the Five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters - who visited South Africa on the invitation of the African National Congress (ANC) in June - and the presence of four of them at the act.
During his official visit, Ramaphosa inaugurated a business forum on October 22, aiming to explore new avenues for trade and cooperation which go beyond the two countries’ strong political ties.
Also present during the tribute to Oliver Tambo was a representation of the accredited African diplomatic corps on the island, as well as other Cuban officials.
