The University of Cienfuegos continues to advance in scientific and technological studies, with notable impact on economic development within the province over the last five years, as evidenced by the numerous distinctions awarded the institution by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, and the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

This progress was emphasized by Rector Juan Bautista Cogollos Martínez, during a ceremony to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the university, founded in 1979 as the Cienfuegos Advanced Technical Institute.

The number of graduates has now reached more than 22,000, in a broad range of 35 specialties in seven academic departments, led by a faculty which includes 115 PhD and 605 MSc profesors.

Cogollos Martínez gave special attention to the 2014 merger with the province’s Conrado Benítez Pedagogical Sciences University, which has strengthened the teaching staff, and called on students and professors to redouble efforts to participate in local development programs.

The rector concluded his remarks saying, “We will continue working to become a more revolutionary and more relevant university, with an impact on the development of Cuban society.”
