Havana.- Cuban Minister of Foreign Relations Bruno Rodríguez stated today, December 28, that the country has requested a quick and adequate solution which takes into consideration the wellbeing its citizens, be found for the thousands of Cuban migrants stranded in Costa Rica.
I have no information from the technical meeting of the Central American Integration System (SICA) taking place today in Guatemala in regards to the situation of Cubans currently stranded in Costa Rica or other countries of the region, noted Rodríguez to the press gathered at the Palace of the Revolution. After giving a speech at the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament), Foreign Relations Committee, the Cuban minister stated that “I strongly believe that the politicization of U.S. migration policy toward Cuba must change, and must stop encouraging illegal, unsafe and disorderly migration.”
He noted that Cuba is not attending the event in Guatemala “because it specifically regards the nations that must find formulas to satisfy the request made by the Cuban government for a quick and adequate solution, which takes into consideration the wellbeing of our citizens.”
An estimated 7,000 Cubans – intending to continue on to the United States - have been stranded in Costa Rica since November 14, while some 900 others are awaiting visa approval to enter the Central American nation.
