CIEGO DE ÁVILA.— Yesterday, January 5, hundreds of Ciego de Ávila residents, including veterans of the Rebel Army and witnesses to the 1959 caravan welcomed the contingent of Cuban youth reenacting the victorious revolutionaries’ historic journey from Santigao de Cuba to Havana, 57 years ago.

Crowds greeted the caravan, which included 57 outstanding students and youth from the province, as it entered and passed by important locations within the city.

During the commemorative event, several young Ávilans received their Young Communist League (UJC) membership cards from Félix Duarte Ortega, first secretary of the Party in the province and member of the Central Committee.

UJC leader Raúl Reyes Fernández commented that the caravan bears special significance this year, when Fidel’s 90th birthday will be celebrated.
