The Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) paid tribute to Celia Sánchez Manduley, yesterday January 11 in Havana, on the 36th anniversary of her death.

During the event held at the monument to the heroine of the Sierra and the underground, Teresa Amarelle, secretary general of the FMC and member of the Party Central Committee, emphasized the contributions of Celia, whose values and efforts constitute an example for Cuban girls, adolescents and women of today.

Celia Sánchez was a founder and leader of the July 26 Movement in the former province of Oriente and was responsible for the dissemination of Fidel’s ideas and preparing for the arrival of the Granma expenditionaries. She went on to take charge of supplying the nascent Rebel Army, became the first woman to join their ranks in the Sierra Maestra, and after the triumph of the Revolution served in a number of important capacities, always at Fidel’s side, Amarelle recalled.

The FMC leader also announced plans to continue strengthening the organization with a campaign entitled, “56 years conquering the future.”
