
SANTIAGO DE CUBA.— On January 28, floral wreaths sent by the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz and Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, were placed at the mausoleum of José Martí in this city, to commemorate the 163rd anniversary of his birth. Wreaths were also sent on behalf of the Councils of State and Ministers and the Cuban people.
The intellectual and patriot was honored during a political-military ceremony which took place at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery, with the participation of elementary school students, workers and local residents.
Cadets and students from military schools around the country participated in the Guard of Honor at the site which hosts the remains of the national hero.
During her speech, María de los Ángeles Cordero, secretary general of the Federation of Cuban Workers (CTC) in the province, noted that Martí’s legacy lives on in the Cuban people, who are capable of overcoming adversities, no matter how difficult.
Also present during the act were Lázaro Expósito Canto, a member of the Party Central Committee and first secretary in the province; Reinaldo García Zapata, president of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power, as well as other officials.
