March 29, through April 1, Havmun 2016 is taking at the University of Havana (UH). Sponsored by the United Nations organization in Cuba, the Federation of University Students and the Foreign Ministry, the conference is focused on discussing and proposing solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.

Gicela Morales, specialist at the UH Department of Institutional Communication, told ACN that, on this occasion, the principal issue to be addressed is peace as indispensable to sustainable development.

Morales said that 250 Cuban and international delegates are expected, and that they will work in seven commissions, five of them to be conducted in Spanish, one in French, and another in English.

She emphasized that Havmun is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and a number of parallel activities have been organized, in addition to master lectures in Sanguily Theater on University Hill, including one on racial issues in Cuba by Zuleica Romay, president of the Cuban Book Institute and winner of the 2012 Casa de las Americas Prize.

Other topics of discussion include repercussions of armed conflicts for children, terrorism, and decolonization, among others. (ACN)
