The Federation of Cuban Workers (CTC) and national trade unions call on all our people to participate in the national mobilization to celebrate May Day, as they have done for over half a century, which this year is organized under the banner “FOR CUBA: UNITY AND COMMITMENT.”

During the organized activities we will express the conviction that through our own efforts, victories and proven ability to fight, we will continue to carry forward the process of updating the political, economic and social model we have chosen, as a sovereign, independent and socialist nation, aimed at developing the country and the welfare of the people, in which workers play a leading role.

The huge and colorful marches in all our plazas and avenues, with crowds chanting slogans and hoisting a sea of flags and banners, will provide an opportune moment to continue to demand an end to the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and the return of the illegally occupied territory of the Guantánamo Naval Base.

We will transform this May Day into a setting for the recognition and tribute to the historic leader of the Revolution, Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. It will be an opportunity to stress his revolutionary thought and permanent bond with the workers in every work collective.

The May Day celebrations also serve as an opportunity for initiatives to renovate workplaces, and at the same time consolidate the sanitation campaign to eliminate the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

All our union structures are hereby called on to make April the “MONTH OF PRODUCTIVE VICTORIES”, promoting the mobilization of workers to maximize efficiency in each collective, in order to fulfill production plans, ensure services and savings, the result of which will favor improved income. This will also be a space for the recognition of the most outstanding individual and collective results.

We have important motivations to celebrate this day, as we commemorate various anniversaries that dignify us as Cubans and pay tribute to our history and traditions of struggle.

This month we will be encouraged by, and fully committed to, the celebration of the 7th Party Congress, the 55th anniversary of the Literacy Campaign and the declaration of Cuba as a territory free of illiteracy, the 60th anniversary of the landing of the Granma yacht; the 55th anniversary of the Victory of Playa Girón and the proclamation of the socialist character of the Revolution, accomplishments that inspire us.

This celebration of the global proletariat will be held at a time when our America and the Caribbean is experiencing a political scenario characterized by a counteroffensive of the right and transnational capital; this will be an occasion to condemn the maneuvers aimed at destabilizing the leftist and progressive governments in power, particularly in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Brazil.

At the same time it will be a demonstration of our solidarity with the people and workers of America and the world, committed to achieving inclusive social justice, in the struggle for unity and the defense of integrationist spaces such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

We view the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with the United States as a resounding victory of the unwavering willpower of the Cuban people, and note both opportunities and challenges in areas of bilateral interest. We stress our unconditional support for Cuba’s revolutionary and anti-imperialist ideals, the commitment to the just causes of the world and our sister nations.

We will highlight the legacy of great labor leaders on the 105th anniversary of the birth of Lázaro Peña González, Jesús Menéndez Larrondo and José María Pérez Capote, the 115th anniversary of the birth of Aracelio Iglesias Díaz, as well as the example of others whose values identify the different unions and workers.

This May Day we call on you to participate with the conviction that will ensure a conclusive demonstration of consciousness, commitment and the indestructible unity of our people and workers in the construction and development of the work of the Revolution, the recognition of the leadership of Fidel and Raúl, and the support for the agreements arising from the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba.
