
Playita de Cajobabo, Guantánamo.— Young people from the municipality of Imías reenacted the landing of José Martí, Máximo Gómez and other expeditionaries returning from exile to participate in the Cuban War of Independence which began on February 24, 1895.
Also commemorated during the act was the 21st anniversary of the tribute by Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro to Cuba’s national hero and other patriots at the site on Cajobabo beach, on the 100th anniversary of the historic event.
Before the monument, erected in memory of the expeditionaries who arrived on April 11, 1895, a group of youths were presented with their Party and Young Communist League membership cards, while another 90 who will participate in an expedition retracing Martí’s route through Dos Ríos beach, were also recognized.
In addition, participants bid farewell to municipal delegate Jesús Puentes Hernández, president of the Jesús Menéndez credit and services cooperative in Jobo Arriba, who will be representing the territory at the 7th Party Congress.
Several socio-economic initiatives, undertaken in honor of the historic event, were also concluded, such as the renovation of the Cajobabo television center, public screening rooms in Veguitas and Yumurí, and the Regino Eladio Boti cultural center; while the popular route between the municipality and Guantánamo was reopened after a bus was successfully repaired.
