HAVANA.—The National Organization of Collective Law Offices (ONBC) is providing increased training for lawyers, given the opening of Cuba to further foreign investment, aimed at driving the island’s economy.
Ariel Mantecón, chairman of the ONBC Board of Directors, speaking in the capital, noted that a new diploma course has been put together, which in the medium term is compulsory for all those entering their ranks and working in non-traditional areas of law, relating to foreign markets.
He added that the field known as “Border Law” includes matters relating to the current Cuban economic model such as commercial contracts and economic and financial claims.
Mantecón explained that soon, in order to work within these areas in Collective Law Offices, lawyers will require this mandatory qualification.
He noted that foreign investment will further the structural changes that Cuba requires, as short-term loans, savings and exploitation of productive forces alone, do not lead to development.
The lawyer stated that non-traditional legal fields should be thoroughly studied and increasing numbers of lawyers must be inserted in this important area, distributed throughout the country and not only concentrated in Havana.
We also work with international institutions on intensive courses to address this new system of relations with foreign companies, the ONBC chairman noted.
