Cuban writers and artists share the indignation of the Venezuelan people at the desecration, on Sunday, June 12, of the site that houses the remains of the great singer, Ali Primera, in Paraguaná, Falcon State.
This act of vandalism, that damaged the bust of one of the popular performers of the “Canción Latinoamericana” genre and a consistent promoter of the arts at the service of humanist ideals and social justice, has once again revealed the lack of morals of fascist elements seeking to create chaos, exalt violence and overthrow the legitimate government of this country.
To attack cultural values is intrinsic to fascism. Today a symbol is attacked, tomorrow it could be any other expression and even a physical attack on creators themselves. In the past century we witnessed the burning of books and works of art. The martyrdom to which Victor Jara was subjected remains a painful memory.
On expressing our strongest condemnation of this denigrating act, Cuban intellectuals and artists reiterate our solidarity with the Bolivarian cause and trust that it can overcome the onslaught of the oligarchy and imperialist interference.
