HAVANA. - The President of El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Cerén and the President of the UN General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, arrived in the capital last night, to participate in the official signing of the Colombian agreement on a definitive bilateral ceasefire, an end to hostilities, the decommissioning of weapons and security guarantees, to be held today, June 23.
Upon arrival, Sánchez Cerén stated that it was a privilege for his country to be present at this historic event, which not only concerns peace in Colombia, but forms part of a wider process underway in Latin America.
“We hope this signing, which is symbolic of the fact that Latin America has established itself as a zone of peace, will open up the opportunity for a final agreement,” the President stated.

He also took the opportunity to thank the Cuban people and government for their solidarity and ongoing support of the peace process, demonstrating how the island strengthens and consolidates its friendship with the whole of Latin America.
The United Nations Organization will play an important role in the monitoring and verification of the agreements on the definitive bilateral ceasefire and the laying down of arms.
Meanwhile, Mogens Lykketoft will accompany UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, in signing the important agreement. The diplomat is also scheduled to meet with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parilla, this Friday.
