In the context of the support provided by Cuba to over 37,000 special education students — around 1,650 through Plan Turquino— the 7th International Special Education and Pedagogy Congress is currently underway, while the Fourth Elementary Education Symposium is taking place June 27-30 in Havana’s Convention Center.
The event, organized by the Cuban Ministry of Education and Latin American Reference Center for Special Education, was organized to share ideas and experiences on issues related to providing educational services for preschool children with special learning needs, human resource training, professional performance and development, family support, institutional organization, and the use of educational technologies.
The Congress will also include key-note and thematic lectures, symposiums, round table and panel discussions, international courses, and special visits to facilities such as the Dora Alonso, Vo Thi Thang, Eterno Baraguá schools as well as the Fulgencio Oroz pedagogical institute, among others.
Special education has been prioritized by the Cuban government since the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959, and is renowned for the quality and systemic support it provides children with special needs.
