Beginning today, July 4, ten commissions of deputies to the National Assembly of People's Power are meeting to discuss a variety of important issues, including the country's economic development, prior to the inaugural session of the 8th Legislature's Seventh Period of Ordinary Sessions, scheduled to open July 8.

Commissions are scheduled to address increasing agricultural production; legal advice available to small farmers and cooperatives; the development of renewable energy sources and efficient use of electricity; and progress on local production of construction materials and housing programs.

Other issues on the agenda include sections of the Labor Code regarding the protection of women and workers 15 to 18 years of age; government attention to the self-employed and private sector; and an updating of management practices in telecommunications.

All commissions will include discussions on the recent 7th Party Congress, including the approved updating of Economic and Social Policy Guidelines and the Central Report, presented by First Secretary Raúl Castro Ruz, as well as Fidel's speech; in addition to the issues of social indiscipline, illegalities and corruption, and efforts underway to improve the functioning of People's Power bodies.
