FACTS

•   Provinces achieving the lowest rates: Sancti Spíritus (2.0), Pinar del Río (2.1), Camagüey (3.0), Holguín (3.3), Artemisa (3.7), Ciego de Ávila (3.8).

•   Ten with higher rates: Matanzas (5.7), Mayabeque (5,.3), Guantánamo (4.7), Isle of Youth (4.7) Granma (4.7), Villa Clara (4.6), Cienfuegos (4.4), La Habana (4.4), Las Tunas (4.2), y Santiago de Cuba (4.0).

•   Neonatal mortality (for infants under 28 days of age) reduced from 2.4 to 2.1 for every 1,000 live births.

•   Mortality due to perinatal conditions reduced from 1.5 to 1.3, including those related to premature births, hyaline membrane disease, intraventricular and lung hemorrhage.

•   Infant mortality due to congenital birth defects was again reported as 0.8 the same rate seen in 2016.

•   Mortality for children under five years of age was reduced from 5.5 to 5.4 for every 1,000 live births, representing 18 fewer deaths.

•   Mortality rates for school aged children was reduced from 2.2 to 1.7 for every 10,000 in habitants in this age group, for a total of 62 fewer deaths.

•   The low birth rate was reduced from 5.2 to 5,.1 for every 100 births.

•   The rate of maternal deaths was reduced from 41.9 to 38.3 for every 100,000 births, representing five fewer deaths than last year.
