Reaffirming the priority given by Cuba’s government to tapping the full potential of socialist state enterprises, this Wednesday, the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, began his work day with a visit to the Metal-Mecánica Varona company, distinguished by its constant development and search for new projects, designs, and assembly work.

Located in the Havana municipality of San Miguel del Padrón, the enterprise was founded by Fidel on April 10, 1978, and its workshops currently produce machinery and parts, making a significant contribution to replacing imports.

The Cuban President toured the Havana shop, the most important of the company’s five basic enterprise units (UEB), where, among other works, machinery is produced for mini-industries processing fruits and vegetables.

Its general director, Jorge Pérez Cruz, explained that the UEB also produces components and parts for sugar mills and water treatment plants; tanks to store water, fuel and alcohol; plus furniture and equipment for the food processing and medical industries.

"What you do here is not only an important contribution to import substitution, but also to the development of national industry," stated Díaz-Canel, who insisted that the company should continue to promote and exhibit its products in all possible scenarios, to become better known, while urging staff to set their sights on exports.

The company’s radius of action includes updating the canning industry, the fabrication of truck tanks and parts for the feed industry, as well as new projects in the Mariel Special Development Zone.

Díaz-Canel likewise insisted on the importance of collaborating with universities to advance innovation and development.
