This second Sunday of May, the relentless battle against COVID-19 makes for a different Mother's Day.

Across Cuba, the date is customarily celebrated with family dinners at home, outings to restaurants and parks, along with visit to the cemetery to honor mothers where their remains rest.

But this year is different, especially for the thousands of mothers throughout the country who will not be home, contributing to the economic and social battle underway.

The tenderness, passion and strength of our mothers are fundamental in times like these.

They were the first to ask: How can we help those who need it? What can we do to confront the epidemic?

This second Sunday of May, thousands of Cuban mothers will be fighting for life and for the well-being of the country. They are not only defending the present of their children and grandchildren. They are protecting the entire people and building the future of Cuba.
