The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raul Castro Ruz, sent a message of congratulations to combatants of the Antonio Maceo Order Border Brigade, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary in defense of the homeland, precisely on the perimeter of the U.S. naval base, illegally located in Guantanamo.
During the military ceremony, outstanding members of the battalion were recognized with the Border Brigade’s 60th anniversary Commemorative Seal, awarded for exemplary service in the Revolutionary Armed Forces, and distinctions for exceptional service in defensive training. Membership cards were also presented to new Young Communist League and Party militants.
Amanda Martínez Crespo, an International Relations student, reiterated the commitment of her cohort to the homeland’s defense, as faithful followers of the legacy of Comandante en jefe Fidel Castro Ruz and soldiers like Ramón López Peña, who lost his life here in the line of duty. Colonel Elio Enrique Barrera Garcell, head of the Unit, spoke of the heroism and self-sacrifice displayed by those who safeguard national sovereignty, with discipline and cohesion.
The event was presided by Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee member and Deputy Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Major General Roberto Legrá Sotolongo.
