Guantánamo has the human, material and natural potential to achieve greater economic and social development, but these resources must be better employed, stated Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, Party First Secretary and President of the Republic, yesterday, during a government visit to the province, where he learned of the territory’s efforts to confront a severe drought and increase local food production.
The President toured the Argeo Martínez sugar mill, the only such facility operating in Guantánamo which has the responsibility to meet the needs of the province’s population. Also participating in the discussion about production delays were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Alejandro Gil, and Rafael Pérez Fernández, a member of the Party Central Committee and its First Secretary in the province. At this time, the mill has produced only about 4,000 tons of sugar, 34% of the total projected for this harvest,.
The plant faces serious technological and transportation difficulties, but has managed to recover some lost time and advance toward meeting its goals, and surpass them. Making the most of the working day to stabilize current production, without neglecting maintenance that is critical to the future, are key, Diaz-Canel noted.
He urged management to better support workers, especially young people, since quality of life and comfortable working conditions also contribute to greater productivity. Along these lines, he noted efforts to open onsite day care centers to allow parents to make a greater contribution in meeting the mill's social objective.
The national delegation’s visit to the province, which concludes today, includes all municipalities, to ensure a broad exchange with the people, since social communication is fundamental to government work.
