
Floral wreaths from the leader of the Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, and the Party First Secretary and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, adorned tributes to José Antonio Echeverría in his hometown of Cardenas, in the province of Matanzas, and in Havana, yesterday, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the assault on the Presidential Palace and the seizure of Radio Reloj.
Flowers were also delivered on behalf of the Federation of University Students (FEU) and the Cuban people, to honor one of our most beloved sons.
As is customary on the date, Cardenas residents marched to the local cemetery in a pilgrimage to express their respect and affection for that young man and his comrades in struggle, who sacrificed their lives for the homeland.
Karla Santana Rodríguez, national president of the Federation of University Students (FEU), recalled the audacity of Echeverría, and the epic feat of the young men who died with him, but live on in history.
The event in Matanzas was presided by Liván Izquierdo Alonso, Party secretary in the province, and Governor Mario Sabines Lorenzo, with many local authorities, youth and student leaders in attendance.
In the capital, a ceremony was held to commemorate the anniversary of the heroic deed, at the Museum of the Revolution, presided by Jorge Luis Broche Lorenzo, Party Secretariat member.
On the occasion, combatants of the March 13th Revolutionary Directorate presented a copy of José Antonio's political testament, to the FEU president, as a symbol of their certainty that his values and efforts will always guide the Cuban youth.
Karla Santana, on behalf of the FEU Secretariat, expressed her gratitude to the combatants for their unconditional loyalty to the Revolution, and presented them with a plaque bearing the image of José Antonio.
Also present at the tribute were Deputy Prime Minister Jorge Luis Perdomo; Minister of Public Health José Angel Portal Miranda; Minister of Education Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella; and Aylín Álvarez García, first secretary of the Young Communists League National Committee.
