It comes as no surprise that, despite the U.S. bravado about its exclusion of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the IX Summit of the Americas, to be held in June, several governments stated that, if all of the continent’s countries were not invited, they would not attend.
Those with some self-respect could not turn a blind eye. After Mexican President Lopez Obrador took this position, the Presidents of Bolivia and Honduras, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the Caribbean Community (Caricom) stepped forward expressing their disagreement with the refusal of the United States to include all, closing ranks.
Meeting today, May 27, on our island, a dignified land which the empire seeks to silence, are the heads of state and government of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples' Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP).
Unlike the one in Los Angeles, where the topics to be discussed reflect the interests of a few, and genocidal policies toward other countries are intensified, during this Summit, our leaders will work hard to find ways and implement strategies for the common benefit of our peoples, and the words that most resonate will be recovery, commitment, cooperation, unity, solidarity.
Regarding the other Summit, from which we have been excluded, it will not be what it claims with so many empty chairs. The eloquent silence and absences will speak louder than words. Cuba knows this; and we are not alone.
At a time when the punishment has reached brutal proportions, we have saved our people and resisted. No one, even blindfolded, can deny the brilliance of our heroic existence.
