At the moment Cuba is the country with the highest number of booster doses against COVID-19 applied to its population, in the world, the Finlay Vaccine Institute reported on its Twitter account.

Behind the island are nations such as China, Italy, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Brazil, the United States, India, Russia and South Africa, among others.

The source also regrets that more than 220 million people in Latin America still do not have a single dose of an immunogen against the disease caused by SARS-COV-2.

This year, our country began the application of a second booster dose to people over 50 years of age, in addition to some risk groups, including health workers, the BioCubaFarma business group and sectors such as tourism and education, which puts the island among the nations that are at the forefront of this process at the international level.

With the expansion of the people to be vaccinated with the second booster dose, more than four million elderly people and more than 800,000 people belonging to vulnerable groups will be benefited.

Likewise, the country's leadership and health authorities agreed on applying the first booster dose with Cuban anti-COVID-19 vaccines to adolescents and young people between 12 and 18 years of age, at least six months after completing the immunization schedule.

The campaign will cover about 848,000 individuals of these ages. Until now, the booster dose was applicable to people 19 years of age and older.

According to the daily report provided by the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, as of July 2nd, a total of 7 406 592 people had received booster doses, 324 646 of them as part of the clinical study, and 7 081 946 as part of the booster vaccination being applied to the population of selected territories and at-risk groups.
