The two remaining air terminals, Manzanillo and Cienfuegos, will begin operations soon, José Ramón Hernández, director of Ground Operations of Empresa Cubana de Aeropuertos y Servicios Aeroportuarios S.A. (ECASA in Spanish), told Granma newspapers.
He noted that an airline from Algeria and another from Serbia have contacted Cuba to explore possible operations and, in the case of the U.S. airlines, United Airlines began flights this week, while Delta plans to resume the Cuban itinerary for the summer of 2023.
He highlighted that TAAG airlines, from Angola, and Aeromexico, which had ceased their flights to the island during the COVID-19 pandemic, restarted their operations just a few weeks ago. These decisions are evidence of the confidence in Cuba as a destination.
CUBAN AIRPORTS READY FOR HIGH TOURISM SEASON
Liset Urgellés Carreras, deputy director of ECASA, stressed that the services of this company are aimed at three fundamental lines: ground assistance to aircraft and passengers, fuel supply service and non-aeronautical commercial activity. She highlighted the services of VIP lounges, the leasing of spaces for advertising and baggage sealing.
She added that, prior to the increase of these operations, and within the current context, our airports remain under a continuous investment process.
In this sense, the airport infrastructure is being remodeled with the fundamental objective of improving the services and image of these facilities, while they work to continue maintaining the safety of operations, both in Havana and in the rest of the country's airports.
She said that the main investments are aimed at repairing the sanitary services, changing the flow of passengers in the Customs departure lounges, redesigning the image of the air terminals and the exterior areas surrounding these infrastructures, installing all the signage and remodeling the points of sale and commercial offices of travel agencies and tour operators.
