For a five-year term of office, the 168 municipal assemblies of People's Power were constituted on Saturday throughout the country, and the National Electoral Council (CEN) declared the validity of the vote -through free, equal, direct and secret ballot- that defined their presidents and vice presidents, in addition to appointing their secretaries.
CEN informed that, in strict compliance with the Constitution and the Electoral Law, the constitutive exercise was attended by 98.66% of the constituency delegates elected last November 27, who pledged their oath as faithful servants of the people and of their community.
It was reported that the results achieved on election day were superior to previous processes, since of the elected presidents and vice-presidents -all with more than 50% of the valid votes cast-, 182 women hold either of the two positions, which means 54.49%, and a 4.19% increase in representation.
In addition, the average age of those elected dropped to 43 years, the number of those with higher education increased to 95.5%, and the number of blacks and mulattos increased to 131, or 39% of the total.
CEN stated that the validity and quality of this democratic process ratifies the municipal assemblies of the People's Power as the highest organ of the State in their area, and emphasized their direct responsibility in the promotion of the economic and social development of the territories, as worthy representatives of the interests of the people.
IN THE MUNICIPALITIES, THEIR DEPUTIES
Just as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and the president of the National Assembly of People's Power, Esteban Lazo Hernández, did in Santa Clara and Arroyo Naranjo, respectively, the deputies accompanied, in the municipalities they represent, the constitution of the municipal assemblies.
Speaking at the Havana locality body, Lazo Hernandez referred to the need to increase municipal autonomy in practice, and said that the first thing is to see what are the potentialities of the territory and exploit them.
"This has to be the concept for management in all municipalities: participation is not only that people give their opinion, but also that they act in the construction of the society we want," he reflected (National Newsroom).
