Floral offerings from Army General Raul Castro Ruz, leader of the Revolution; from the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez; from the Councils of State and Ministers, and from the Cuban Youth, were placed yesterday at the foot of the monument erected to student and anti-imperialist leader Julio Antonio Mella, in front of the University of Havana.
In its Aula Magna, the Federation of University Students (FEU) paid guard of honor next to the mask of the martyr and revolutionary exemplar, made by Mexican painter and sculptor Roberto Montenegro, which was given to Army General Raul Castro Ruz by the Mexican Communist Party on March 29, 1996.
According to Tribuna de La Habana, on the 95th anniversary of Mella's assassination in Mexico, at the hands of hitmen of Gerardo Machado's government, a representation of FEU members received the UJC card, in an evening presided by Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party in Havana; Yanet Hernández Pérez, governor of the city; and Meibis Estévez Echeverría, second secretary of the National Committee of the Union of Young Communists (UJC).
