Cuba is today a single family, it is united with those of Assel Herrera Correa and Landy Rodríguez Hernández. Social networks are witnessing messages from all corners of the country to the families and friends of both doctors. They also come from Cuban medical missions in different countries around the world, in which 600,000 collaborators in six decades have served in 165 countries.
About them, who were fulfilling their medical mission in Kenya when they were kidnapped in April 2019 by the terrorist group based in Somalia, Al Shabaab, unofficial information indicates that they died in the place where they were held captive.
The Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda, informed that, although it is known about the bombings, the information about a fatal outcome has not been confirmed.
He said that, from the moment the country became aware of this situation - through the constant monitoring system deployed - the families of Assel and Landy were immediately informed. In this regard, Cuban authorities are in permanent conversation with their Kenyan and Somali counterparts, and our people will be informed as soon as updated reports are received.
He clarified that this exchange is not a temporary one, but that since the first days of the abduction, five years ago, Cuba has made systematic efforts for their return to their homeland; other governments and personalities have even collaborated.
The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, expressed on the social network x all his affection to the relatives, in these moments of uncertainty and increased pain. "I admire the strength of both families and remember with great affection our previous meetings," he said, and affirmed that they represent the noble and generous spirit of a people who share even what they do not have, with the humble of the earth. He assured that Cuba does not lose hope of finding them alive.
