More than 2,000,000 visitors chose Cuba as a destination in 2023, including those from Canada, the main source of tourists to the largest of the Antilles. Russia and some European nations such as Spain, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and several Latin American countries also stand out.
This was revealed at the annual balance meeting of the Ministry of Tourism, which was headed by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and the member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz.
These results were achieved despite the measures taken by the U.S. Government to prevent the development of tourism on the island, including sanctions against citizens to enter U.S. territory if they have previously visited Cuba; the impediment to use international credit cards, financial persecutions and hate campaigns.
But Cuba has the values to counteract the cruel imperial policy, and in this regard, Díaz-Canel urged to defend the practices of sustainable development, environmental protection, the implementation of the circular economy, and to present the country in an appropriate way, according to the times and the digital world.
We must highlight, he argued the many unique things we have, to employ animation in terms of Cuban culture, to turn to what distinguishes us as a people and to use science and innovation with creativity.
Marrero Cruz urged to plan the sector's potential and to consolidate linkages with non-state management.
According to Juan Carlos García Granda, Minister of Tourism, workers in this sector intend to reverse the deficiencies in 2024, offer quality products and services, and overcome the barrier of three million visitors.
