THIRD FRONT, Santiago de Cuba: More than a hundred kilometers from the city, in the hills of the Sierra Maestra, and during the rebel battle to ignite the road to independence, 52 schools and six field hospitals were founded.
There, under the accurate voice of Commander Juan Almeida Bosque, a group of bearded men defended the mountain peasants against the exploitation of the owners, and set up plants that amplified the signal of Radio Rebelde, a radio station that broadcast the truth of the war and called the people to the struggle.
The courage of the column number three Santiago de Cuba, of the Third Front Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy -which combined armed actions and social development-, was evoked yesterday in the Loma de la Esperanza, 66 years after its foundation.
Students of the Camilo Cienfuegos Military School, in Contramaestre, carried out the guard of honor, next to the marble slab that guards the remains of the Commander of the Revolution, leader of the Front, to whom the inhabitants of the mountain range also paid tribute.
