When talking about gender equality and its close relationship with social prevention, the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) is the preponderant instance to train people in this sense.
With this idea as a banner, a debate was held in the commission "Preventive and educational work of the FMC in the formation of values and its community work", which was held during the XI Congress of the organization.
Among the proposals, reference was made to the public policies that have been developed to prevent gender violence. However, challenges persist, because there is insufficient follow-up to the cases that are detected, and their definitive solution.
In this regard, Dr. Clotilde Proveyer stressed that it is necessary to raise awareness of the causes of the problem and carry out a comprehensive and intersectoral analysis. "The Federation cannot be thought of in isolation, but in its link with the Government, with the agencies of the Central State Administration and social workers".
It is no surprise to anyone -continued the specialist- that the scourge manifests itself in a subtle, silent way, and that our country has a legislative framework to protect the victims and penalize the aggressors. However, the culture of law must be broadened and the personnel responsible for dealing with this conflict must be trained.
Proveyer insisted on the mainstreaming of the gender perspective in the different sectors of society, and the urgency of bringing the issue closer to the most intricate places in the country.
"A change in the patriarchal culture is required, because adolescent pregnancy and gender violence cannot be solved only with the current law. Families, the media and schools continue to be biased. Therefore, it is necessary to make a change", she added.
The feminist also expressed that, if an analysis is made of the places with the highest teenage pregnancy rates, it can be seen that these are the places where macho ideals are most entrenched. "Even if we have the best laws, if we do not transform the spaces of socialization, in charge of developing the culture, the rest will be difficult".
Regarding this problem, he stated that the main causes are child marriage, accessibility to contraceptive methods and education for adolescents so that they can decide with autonomy. The island has the tools to eradicate it, it is only necessary to revolutionize the thoughts about sexual and reproductive health issues.
