The fourth working visit of the year—one per month—began yesterday in Sandino, the westernmost municipality of Cuba, to the provinces of Pinar del Río and Artemisa. Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, was on the visit to follow up on the development of the priorities of the country and territories in the present year.
At mid-morning, accompanied by the Secretary of Organization, Roberto Morales Ojeda, he met with inhabitants at the entrance of the Municipal Committee of the Party. He emphasized the availability of land to produce most of the food that is demanded in the region, both agricultural and livestock, as well as other strengths to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of this area.
At the base business unit (EUB in Spanish) Silvícola Victoria-La Fe, a spacious nursery that guarantees the postures for the reforestation of areas of the Guanahacabibes Agroforestry Enterprise, Carlos Carballo Chirino, director of the entity, explained that in 2023 they concluded with favorable results. In the first quarter of this year, the statistics continue to be positive.
The María la Gorda tourist center is also a source of income. In addition to maintaining the ditches on the road leading to the center, they also oversee the carpentry, gardening, and other tasks at the facility.
The President commended the achievements of the Guanahacabibes Agroforestry Enterprise and highlighted that "this is a company with a strong culture and impressive results. However, we must continue to strive for more." Díaz-Canel also emphasized the municipality's potential to produce more food, noting that there is sufficient land available.
He also highlighted the jurisdiction's capacity to achieve municipal self-sufficiency, although not all crops can be grown with acceptable productivity due to the type of soils there.
He then focused on the expansion of livestock, emphasizing the importance of pasture-based and protein plant-based feeding. This topic was a key focus at the EUB Ganado Sandino Cattle Farm No. 1.
LOS NARANJOS OF CAIMITO
After concluding their visit to Sandino, the Party leadership proceeded to Caimito municipality in Artemisa, where they continued their meetings with workers and the local population.
The day was dedicated to the recovery of Los Naranjos Genetic Livestock Enterprise. The Head of State was accompanied by Gladys Martínez Verdecia, member of the Political Bureau and first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party, and Ricardo Concepción Rodríguez, governor of the territory. They learned about an enterprise’s integrated recovery program that has been implemented across four municipalities in Artemisa. That enterprise was, some time ago, the leading producer of stallions in the country.
The recovery program is a comprehensive project that began ten months ago. Its initial focus is on personnel, with subsequent actions to guarantee water with pumps energized with renewable sources, food, aquaponics, and other requirements, from artificial insemination to veterinary medicine.
In the community of Los Naranjos, the villagers were awaiting the arrival of Díaz-Canel. The President expressed gratitude for their efforts to revive livestock farming in the municipality and province. However, he emphasized the need for sustained efforts to ensure that setbacks are avoided in the future.
