The President of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, Numan Kurtulmuş, had an intense but cordial working agenda in Havana on Wednesday, where he met with members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People's Power, Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister, and Salvador Valdés Mesa, Vice President of Cuba.
The Cuban authorities conveyed fraternal greetings from the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, to his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while reiterating his gratitude to the Turkish people and government for the hospitality with which he was received in 2023, reported the Cuban Parliament's Communications Team.
In the meeting with Lazo Hernández at the Havana Capitol, a memorandum of understanding was signed for the establishment of a parliamentary working group, while the distinguished visitor highlighted the similarities between the two peoples and expressed his country's support for the end of the U.S. blockade against Cuba.
The head of the State Council also highlighted the quality of relations between the two nations, based on the high-level exchanges that have taken place, and recalled that May 25 marks the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
On the other hand, during the dialogue with the Cuban Prime Minister at the Palace of the Revolution, the existing opportunities for cooperation were discussed and important moments of the mutual bond were recalled, such as the visit of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro to Istanbul in 1996, the arrival for the first time of a President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to Cuba in 2015, and the visit of Díaz-Canel to this nation in November 2022.
In his first official visit to the island, the President of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye was also received by the Vice President of the Republic, who informed him about the socio-economic-administrative and legislative transformation process taking place in the nation.
"We are working in the country under strong pressure", the Vice President denounced in reference to the intensified blockade; at the same time, he expressed his gratitude to Türkiye for its support in the UN.
