"It is with deep sorrow that we receive the sad news of the passing of one of the best friends of the Cuban Revolution, His Excellency Dr. Sam Nujoma," wrote the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in the Book of Condolences opened at the Embassy of Namibia in Havana, in honor of the Founding Father of that sister nation.
On behalf of the Cuban government and people, he stressed, "we express our deepest condolences for the physical loss of the Founding Father and President of the sister Republic of Namibia, to his people and government, as well as to his family and friends."
The president also wrote that "we will always hold in a special place his constant expressions of respect, friendship and affection towards Cuba, and his close friendship with Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and Army General Raúl Castro Ruz."
Díaz-Canel went yesterday to Namibia's diplomatic headquarters in Cuba, accompanied by members of the Political Bureau, Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People's Power; Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz; and the Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee, Roberto Morales Ojeda; as well as by the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gerardo Peñalver Portal. There he was received by the Namibian ambassador, Samuel Hendrik Goagoseb.
Sam Nujoma passed away last Saturday at the age of 95. The Namibian president, Nangolo Mbumba, then wrote in his account in the social network x: "with the greatest regret and sadness, I announce this morning of February 9, 2025 to the people of Namibia, to our African brothers and sisters and to the world in general, the passing of our revered freedom fighter and revolutionary leader".
Cuba declared Official Mourning and National Mourning -between February 10 and 12-, and the note that accompanied that announcement meant that Sam Nujoma showed all his life a special affection for Cuba and support for the Cuban Revolution, since the stage when he led the heroic Namibian people in the struggle for independence.
He was a fervent promoter of solidarity with Cuba and never ceased to recognize and appreciate the Cuban contribution to the struggles for the liberation of Africa and the end of apartheid. In 1991, he was awarded the José Martí Order, the highest distinction granted by the Cuban State.
