El Uvero, Santiago de Cuba.- Once again, as 68 years ago in El Uvero, shots rang out, but this time accompanied by shouts of "Victory!" from some 1,500 people from Santiago, especially 68 outstanding young people, in the commemoration of another anniversary of that iconic combat of the Rebel Army.
Everything took place on the premises of the monument that honors the transcendental event, with the presence of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, accompanied by the member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee, Roberto Morales Ojeda, and the main authorities of the territory.
A wreath on behalf of the Cuban people was placed at the base of the monument. As speaker, the young doctor from Guam, Leo Dan Suarez Martinez, said that "we are heirs of that tradition of struggle, committed to the historical continuity and faithful to the legacy of Fidel, Raul and Che. As a doctor, son of peasants, I assume the duty of promoting the welfare of all".
The martyrs were remembered with the voice of ¡Presentes! and Fidel's pronouncement resounded again there, on May 28, 1965, when he emphasized that "everything that is said about the bravery with which they fought, would not be able to describe the heroism of our combatants".
Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, first secretary of the Party in the province, made reference, in the central words, to "the total transformation of this mountain range by the Revolution that triumphed on January 1st, 1959 (...). As in El Uvero, today the resistance marks the path to victory (...) our will to continue pushing the country and our people, to whom a monument must be made (...) El Uvero was the seed of hope where, with limited resources, it was possible to triumph".
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Diaz-Canel exchanged with 68 outstanding young people from the province, who camped at the site, "to honor those who fell here, and revitalize the commitment," said historian Adrielis Jardines Diaz.
